I am always thinking of different ways to impact the lives of every Young Champ that we have in our program and even the ones that haven't mad their way home yet. With the help of a new friend, I decided to offer a recurring monthly donation amount of $10. This money will go to providing healthy snacks after workouts and scholarships for graduating Champs.

Click on of the two Donate now buttons and you will be on your way to helping a champ. There is one just below the picture of some of the Champs and another along the right side of the page.

Self-esteem is similar to self-worth (how much a person values himself or herself). This can change from day to day or from year to year, but overall self-esteem tends to develop from infancy and keep going until we are adults.

Self-esteem also can be defined as feeling capable while also feeling loved. A child who is happy with an achievement but does not feel loved may eventually experience low self-esteem. Likewise, a child who feels loved but is hesitant about his or her own abilities can also develop low self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem comes when a good balance is maintained.

Patterns of self-esteem start very early in life. The concept of success following effort and persistence starts early. Once people reach adulthood, it's harder to make changes to how they see and define themselves.

So, it's wise to think about developing and promoting self-esteem during childhood. As kids try, fail, try again, fail again, and then finally succeed, they develop ideas about their own capabilities. At the same time, they're creating a self-concept based on interactions with other people. This is why parental involvement is key to helping kids form accurate, healthy self-perceptions.

Parents and caregivers can promote healthy self-esteem by showing encouragement and enjoyment in many areas. Avoid focusing on one specific area; for example, success on a spelling test, which can lead to kids feeling that they're only as valuable as their test scores.

I wanted to make sure that the paperwork was complete and the check was mailed, before I let everyone know what the "Something New" was. The something new, is a fitness program for girls. It is called Fit Girls and it is for girls in 4th and 5th grade that uniquely combines training for a 5k race with reading and community outreach. I think it is a great program and I am excited to be able to offer this to the young ladies at Francone Elementary. My wife will be the ambassador for this program at Francone and will help me coordinate any other future locations. The goal is to have this program and Kelly's Champions at all title one schools in Cy-Fair isd. So expect more fundraising from the Champs ad FIt Girls. I am excited and I hope that I can continue to count on your support.

Words from the Champ

Words from the Champ
Kelly"s Championshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01199428879793175518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2908651090813899138.post-91213012558994110212012-11-25T19:58:00.001-08:002012-11-25T19:58:42.733-08:00Something New
I am always thinking of how I can reach the most kids as possible. WOD for 2012 Beat the Streets Fundraiser:
...

2 PERSON TEAMS
AMRAP 10 MIN:

40 KB Swings (1.5pd, 54#/1 pd, 36#)
30 Burpees
20 Pullups (Competitive: Chest to Bar Pullups, Social: Jumping pullups)
10 Squats (Competitive: Front Squats 135#/95#, Social: Air Squats)

One person working at a time. Score is total number of reps in 10 min.

Rules

Teams of 2, can be M/M, M/F, F/F, Youth/M, Youth/F, Youth/Youth.

Prescribed (Rx'd) for Teens = Women's weights. To be eligible for National Prizes, the WOD must be done as prescribed.

All reps of one exercise must be done before moving to the next exercise.

One person is allowed to do all the reps of a given exercise, if so desired.

Scoring

Final score is total number of reps completed by the team in 10 min.

We recommend that L1 Trainers or experienced CrossFitters judge the Competitive Teams.

Movement Standards
• KB Swings - Rep must finish with the kettlebell directly overhead, bottom of the bell facing up. The "snatch" version of KB Swings are ok.
• Burpee - Chest must touch the floor, athlete must clap overhead and jump at the top of the movement (at the same time), ears showing as they clap overhead.
• C2B Pullups - Arms must be straight at the bottom, and chest (clavicle or below) must touch the bar at the top of the pullup. For jumping pullups, arms straight at the bottom, then chin should be at the height of the bar at the top (does not need to be over the bar).
• Front Squats - Crease of the hip below the knee (must be below parallel). Full extension at the top. Barbell must be cleaned to the rack position, first rep can be a squat clean. If scaling, athletes can use any lesser weight (or goblet squats with a KB) or choose to do air squats. In all cases, same range of motion as the front squat.

Scaling/Substitutions

Be sure to ask if anyone has injuries or should not be doing any of these exercises. Trainers should use their judgment in scaling the weight, especially with new people or unfit individuals.

Teams that scale cannot compete in the Competitive Division.

While I was at the Crossfit Games I learned that there was a
Teen Crossfit Competition. On a normal day that would have been great news. But
it wasn’t, I was told that it was invitation only and there was no Steve’s Club
kids invited. It is very difficult for
me to understand how any major Teen completion could not include Steve’s Club.
When I think of CF kids, I think of two entities Brand X and Steve’s Club. At first I was upset, but after some time I got
over it. Not really I’m still pissed about it.
I don’t think it’s fair that kids be invited to a competition that’s being
put on by an organization that preaches community. The adults had to earn their
spot, so why not the kids too. I am building Champions and under no
circumstances does a Champion get invited to become one. He/ She will earn it
and is willing to show the world why they deserve to have the title. How can I tell kid, if you work hard you will be
rewarded for it. When what it really
takes is some BS politics and an invitation. Com’on Son!

It may be difficult to tell the difference between a sprain and a break. If there is any doubt whatsoever, phone your doctor or take your child to the nearest hospital emergency department. An X-ray can determine whether a bone is broken.

Everyone has heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a
child”. I started to think about that in
a different way. I said to myself, “Self, what if you’re trying to raise a
healthy child?” and then I answered “If
that’s the case, then it will take a gym to raise them”. After this
brief conversation I had with myself, I put a plan into motion. I decided to do
away with my Wednesday Crossfit class at Jowell Elementary. So that left me with just Tuesday and
Thursday. The biggest problem with this was that most of my kids live in the
Katy area and had no way of commuting to the gym. I had no way of picking them
up and bringing them to the gym. My
father had a 1996 Chevy Tahoe that hadn’t been driven in a while. I had asked for the vehicle before, but he wasn’t
giving it up. Just as luck would have it, the property manager at the Condo
where he lives put one of them big ugly ass orange “I’m going to tow your car,
if you don’t move it stickers” on it. A few days after this happened, I get a
birthday call from Dad and he tells me that he wants to give me the Tahoe as a
gift. So I pretended to not know about the sticker and graciously accepted the “gift”.
So now I was all set to bring the kids to the gym. I began picking kids or sometimes just one
kid and bringing them to the gym. Instantly it made a difference. The athletes and owners were very accepting of
them. As a matter of fact I know have athletes helping me coach them and the
owners get just as excited as I do when more kids show up. I
think there have been studies done by people way smarter than me and it shows
that removing kids from certain environments can help. You can choose to believe them or not. All I’m saying is that I'm trying to raise “Champions
“and that has to be done in a Gym!!

Why play sports? You might say "to get exercise" and you'd be right. To have fun? That's true, too. But there's more. In fact, there are at least 5 more reasons. According to the Women's Sports Foundation, girls who play sports get a lot more than just fit.

Girls who play sports do better in school. You might think that athletics will take up all your study time. But research shows that girls who play sports do better in school than those who don't. Exercise improves learning, memory, and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage in the classroom.

Girls who play sports learn teamwork and goal-setting skills. Sports teaches valuable life skills. When you working with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals, you're learning how to be successful. Those skills will serve you well at work and in family life.

Sports are good for a girl's health. In addition to being fit and maintaining a healthy weight, girls who play sports are also less likely to smoke. And later in life, girls who exercise are less likely to get breast cancer or osteoporosis.

Playing sports boosts self-confidence. Girls who play sports feel better about themselves. Why? It builds confidence when you know you can practice, improve, and achieve your goals. Sports are also a feel-good activity because they help girls get in shape, maintain a healthy weight, and make new friends.

Exercise cuts the pressure. Playing sports can lessen stress and help you feel a little happier. How? The brain chemicals released during exercise improve a person's mood. Friends are another mood-lifter. And being on a team creates tight bonds between friends. It's good to know your teammates will support you — both on and off the field!
